World Kidney Day, 9th March

Hello, I am Dr. Varun Verma. I am the Director of Nephrology at Max Hospital, Patparganj, and today I want to talk to you about kidneys. Basically, we are celebrating World Kidney Day on March 9th, and the theme we have chosen this year is "Kidney Health for All and Protecting the Vulnerable."

Each year, a specific theme is chosen to spread more awareness about kidney health and to ensure that information reaches the general public, helping them to avoid kidney diseases.

This year's theme aims to inform everyone about what kidney disease is and how to prevent it.

Our Creator has given us two kidneys, both located towards the back near the spine, one on each side. These kidneys work 24/7 to keep our bodies healthy.

Management of Polycystic Kidney Disease

The kidney is a very important organ in our body, and diseases related to it can destroy our body. According to statistics, out of every 1 million people, 800 individuals suffer from some form of kidney disease. Among them, 150 to 2500 need some form of support, such as dialysis or a kidney transplant.

ADPKD is a very rare disease in which cysts form within the kidneys, causing the kidney size to increase from the normal 10 to 12 cm to as much as 15 cm, 20 cm, or sometimes even 30 cm. A kidney, which should ideally weigh around 350 grams, can sometimes weigh significantly more in such cases. We notice this condition in almost 1% of patients.
